The Great Thorpe Railway Disaster 150 Committee Donates £388.79 to RBF
The Great Thorpe Railway Disaster 150 Committee has made a generous donation of £388.79 to Railway Benefit Fund. The funds were raised to commemorate the 26 lives tragically lost in the 1874 railway collision on 10 September. A bronze plaque was commissioned for their church, to remember the lives lost.
Author Phyllida Scrivens, whose book “The Great Thorpe Railway Disaster 1874” delves into the details of this tragic event. Phyllida Scrivens pays tribute to the 28 men, women and children who died, revealing the personal stories behind the names, hitherto only recorded as a list.
The donation will directly benefit railway people and their families facing financial hardships.
The President of RBF, Pete Waterman OBE, said, “We are incredibly grateful to The Great Thorpe Railway Disaster 150 Committee, for their generous donation. Their support will make a significant difference to the lives of railway people and their families facing financial hardship. It’s truly inspiring to see how the past can continue to positively impact the present. While we commemorate the lives lost in the 1874 disaster, we also recognise the ongoing challenges faced by railway people today.”
