Celebrating Our Railway Superstars: 2024 Heart of Gold Award Winners Announced

Railway Benefit Fund (RBF) was proud to announce the winners of the 2024 Heart of Gold Awards. These prestigious awards, chosen by the railway community itself, recognise the dedication, compassion, and outstanding contributions of railway workers.

The awards were presented by Pete Waterman OBE, Charity President and Jo Kaye, CEO at a ceremony kindly hosted by the Railway Industry Association at their Westminster offices.

Jo Kaye, CEO of RBF, commented, “The Heart of Gold Awards truly highlight the exceptional individuals within the railway industry. It’s inspiring to see the dedication and passion of our colleagues.”

The RBF is grateful to everyone who participated in the voting process and helped honour these deserving superstars.

Rising Star Award – Sponsored by Furrer+Frey  

Sophie Styles-Hudson, a Network Rail coordinator, has quickly impressed with her kindness, empathy, and dedication to early careers. She actively seeks new responsibilities and supports her team, making her an invaluable asset.

Rail Hero Award – Sponsored by Freightliner

Grace-Anne Stephenson, an Arriva Rail London dispatcher, is a true hero. Known for her compassionate nature, she intervened to help a distressed woman, ensuring her safety and ultimately saving her life.

Wellbeing Champion Award – Sponsored by Health Shield

Ian Watson, a TransPennine Express driver manager, has overcome personal trauma to become a mental health advocate. He actively supports colleagues and promotes mental health awareness, making a significant impact.

Star Team Award – Sponsored by Amaro

The Network Rail NW&C Route Crime Security & Suicide Prevention Team is dedicated to protecting communities and making the railway safer. They collaborate with various organisations, promote mental health awareness, and provide support to colleagues and passengers.

Inspirational Volunteer Award – Sponsored by Railway Benefit Fund

Susan Smith, a Network Rail team organiser, is an inspirational volunteer. She supports colleagues battling cancer, offering guidance and encouragement, even during her own personal challenges.

Lifetime Achievement Award – Sponsored by Railpen

Frances Phillips, an Avanti West Coast On Board Services Manager, has dedicated over 30 years to the rail industry. Known for her empathy and dedication, she is a respected leader and a valuable asset to the team.

By recognising and celebrating these individuals, RBF aim to inspire and motivate future generations of railway people.
